This course is designed to help students to familiarize themselves with the practice and knowledge of fansub translation (mainly from English into Chinese [both traditional and simplified Chinese]). Students will deliberate upon the application, principles and limitations of fansubbing strategies. They will also learn how to make cultural adjustments in order to connect to local audience. Each week students will have some translation exercises or/and reading materials as their assignment. In the next week we will discuss the related issues and topics in class, and students will give their opinions to their classmates. Through individual presentation and group collaboration, students will have hands-on experience and reinforce their translation capabilities. Thus, hopefully the results of this course will fit in with the expectations and needs in industry.

字幕組是指將外國影片配上本國字幕的愛好者團體，屬於民間自組的團體。最初是由於視聽者對於觀看海外影視作品的急迫需求而產生，由於他們無法取得合法版本，或是官方版本引進速度過慢，加上多數民眾的外語水平不佳，需要借助翻譯才能理解這些海外影片，使得字幕組因而誕生。

在推動海外影視作品進入中國大陸市場的過程中，字幕組扮演了重要角色。字幕組的成員大多是兼職或學生身分，而字幕組招募人員時，通常對於外語能力也要求頗高。藉由字幕組上傳這些附有中文字幕的影片，使得一般民眾也能夠接觸到這些熱門影片，當中不乏優良影視作品，也有助於視聽者培養學習外語的熱情。

雖然字幕組受到網民的歡迎，但依然存在著侵權問題，因為他們是將無合法版權的他人作品翻譯之後，再上傳到網站，供民眾免費觀看，而且有時字幕組為了求「首發」來打知名度，其譯文品質參差不齊。

本課程會研究字幕組的翻譯方式和流程，也會比較官方與字幕組的翻譯表現和差異，並評價兩者在許多不同面向上的作用和優缺點。此外，也會探討字幕組的侵權問題，以及其譯文給予受眾的觀感和影響。

本課程的授課教師專職從事電影字幕翻譯工作十餘年，翻過幾百部院線電影。這門課會以有系統的編排和練習，透過老師講解、閱讀準備、譯文分析和修改、課堂發表和討論等方式，讓學生習得字幕組翻譯的方法策略和實用知識。
